Farmer's field up in smoke

A farmer's field in Spallumcheen went up in smoke Wednesday night, possibly sparked by a combine, according to Armstrong/Spallumcheen fire chief Ian Cummings.

“We knocked it down pretty quickly. I'd estimate it was 2.5 to three acres in size,” said Cummings. “We were lucky there was no wind.”

About 25 firefighters were called to the scene on McLeod Road around 8:30 p.m. – including members of the Enderby fire department. Cummings himself was busy fighting a fire in the BX area of Vernon and had to pull out his teams to rush back to fight the Spall fire.

Although no structures were damaged, Cummings said the fire was heading towards chicken barns before it was put out.

It took about three hours to finish the task, including wetting the areas near the burned field.

“You've got to be 100 per cent certain that it's completely out,” said Cummings. “We went over every square foot of that field to wet it down and then into areas that were not burned in case a spark had flown over. It is fairly meticulous work.”
