Ending illegal camping

The city of Penticton is working diligently with the parks department and RCMP to ensure an area where homeless people set up camps is kept clean and safe.

"Bylaw officers are monitoring the Esplanade Trail Network almost daily to ensure there are no permanent camping structures in place for obvious park and public safety reasons, such as fires," said Mayor Andrew Jakubeit.

The illegal camping has been an ongoing problem in the area also known as Hobo Trails at the end of Marina Way, amplified by a fire there Sunday night.

There will be another check on Thursday, a joint effort by the city and RCMP, Jakubeit said.

The public is also asked to report any campers to bylaw immediately and if a fire is seen to call the Penticton Fire Department.
