Warriors camp opens

The shortest summer in the 10-year history of the West Kelowna Warriors officially came to an end this morning.

The reigning BCHL and RBC Cup champions hit the ice Monday for the start of training camp.

Fourty-two players are registered at the Royal LePage Place camp.

They will practise today and Tuesday, with scrimmage games scheduled for tonight at 5 p.m. and tomorrow afternoon at 2:30.

The Warriors begin the pre-season schedule in earnest Wednesday night in Penticton. They host the Salmon Arm Silverbacks Friday.

Only a handful of players who helped the Warriors win the B.C. and national titles in the spring are back to defend the title. Several key players have moved on either through graduation or to attend university.

Kyler Hope, Jake LeBrun, Garrett Forster, Kyle Marino, Matthew Greenfield and Bryan Basilico have all graduated, while Liam Blackburn, Kristian Blumenschein and Rylan Yaremko are off to university.

Brett Mennear was dealt to Prince George as part of a deal that saw LeBrun and Basilico come to the Warriors at the trade deadline.

The Warriors have added two players in deals during the past two weeks.

Forward Mitchell Barker was acquired from Victoria, while defenceman Stephen Kleysen comes via trade from the Winnipeg Blues of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.

Following the six-game pre-season, the Warriors will open the season Sept. 9 when they host the Trail Smoke Eaters.
