Help for displaced refugees

A major effort is underway to help 10 Syrian refugee families who were displaced following a fire in a housing complex in Coquitlam, on Thursday.

The federal government, through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and Immigrant Settlement Services of BC (ISSofBC), the Province of British Columbia, Emergency Management BC and the Emergency Social Services in the Tri-Cities, the Red Cross, Concert Properties and BC Housing all have been engaged and working together to ensure these individuals receive what they need.

This includes temporary housing, clothing, prescriptions and other essentials. It is anticipated that permanent housing will be located in the coming weeks.

The Fraser Health Authority is also monitoring the situation and is on standby to provide health-care assistance, including mental-health supports for anyone who needs them.

Translators have been available to ensure appropriate needs are taken care of.

The province continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as they become available.
