Motorcycle cop run off road

A police officer on a motorcycle was run off the road by a motorist avoiding an impaired driving road block in West Vancouver Wednesday night.

The vehicle was approaching the roadblock at Cypress Bowl Road and Chippendale Drive, when it made a quick U-turn and attempted to drive away.

Police say the driver lost control on a sharp corner, forcing an officer on a motorcycle to swerve into a ditch to avoid the car.

The officer was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was later released.

The 20-year-old Burnaby driver was given a 12-hour driving prohibition, and police are recommending several charges.

There were four other passengers in the car, but none was injured.

Police set up roadblocks during the Celebration of Light fireworks in Vancouver  this week.

There were only a few arrests made Wednesday night, along with several hundred instances of liquor being poured out.

The finale takes place Saturday night, with up to 500,000 spectators expected to watch the display.
