Midgets played like giants

A local lacrosse team came oh so close to winning it all at the B.C. Summer Games.

The midget Thompson Okanagan boys lacrosse team played Fraser River for the gold medal last week at the Games – a level coach Dan Chetner said he’s never seen the team reach.

Fraser River won in the end, but Chetner said he’s proud of the team’s achievement this year, and he hopes the players are as well.

“By making it to that gold-medal game, they surprised a lot of people,” he said. “It was a great achievement to get ourselves into that gold-medal game.”

A win looked to be in sight after ending the second period with a 6-4 lead. Chetner said it was a game the team could have won, but for the final period – they “just couldn’t hang on.”

The final score was 8-6.

The team launched into the final after beating Fraser Valley 6-1, which Chetner said boosted morale going into championship game.
