Vigilante effort spreading

The vigilante group Creep Catchers has spread to Surrey.

The group lures alleged pedophiles with online ads, text messages and photos, then confronts the men after arranging to meet with supposed minors.

Videos of the confrontations are posted to social media to shame the men.

The group also recently sprang up in Penticton.

A video on the Creep Catchers website shows a man who allegedly thought he was meeting a 14-year-old girl at a Surrey McDonald's.

The Surrey chapter is the first in Metro Vancouver and has posted two videos so far.

“On any social media app, there are creeps,” Surrey president Ryan LaForge told CTV. “It’s scary what’s out there.”

But a Vancouver lawyer has concerns.

“It's unethical, possibly, if as a result of that being posted, somebody faces violence,” David Sutherland told CTV. “There’s no question that the vigilantes are opening themselves up to being sued.”

Surrey RCMP, meanwhile, don’t advise vigilantism.

LaForge said police have warned what he’s doing is dangerous, but added: “We’re in this for the children.”
