Stacking the business deck

Men from around the country are being encouraged to embrace their individuality through a company usually known for styling products.

AXE recently launched their mentorship program ‘Find your Magic’ in Canada to help guys "find their thing, work at it, then help the next guy in line to bring his to life."

Vancouverite Daniel Dubois is one of those men who is assisting others as a mentor in the program.

Previously named in BC Business as one of 30 under 30, Dubois founded ShareShed – an outdoor gear rental company, and Guides – a company that provides unique adventures that can be experienced on the client’s own accord.

Described as an inspiring thought leader and successful entrepreneur, Dubois is giving guidance, time, and inspiration-to help the next generation of men.

Aidan Gay and Kristoffer Vik Hansen were both mentored by Dubios with great success.

Gay is a Kelowna resident with a now thriving business.

The 20-year-old founded the company Basecamp Cards Co. – a unique deck of playing cards that provide the addition of a conversation.

Dubois says he spent just over a month with Gay looking at where the Kelowna resident was with his business platform and how he could be supported.

“We have something called a painted picture, an idea that came from one of my mentors Brian Scudamore,” explained Dubois. “He painted out a picture of a five-year plan of where he wanted to be with his business and relationships and then reverse engineered it. So I did this for my life and it made a major difference so I did the same for Aidan.”

The mentorship program isn’t just geared towards building a business, it's also about building on one's personal goals and relationships.

“He had Basecamp Card Co. before we started, but through a connection I had there, I was able to introduce his product to MEC (national outdoor equipment and clothing retailer).”

Gay’s card game sold out of an entire sales order at MEC in under a week and his online sales were also increased.

As the mentorship came to a close, Dubois brought Gay together with Vik Hansen, who operates Spare Rides – a real-time carpooling platform to produce a video.

He said Vancouver has a reputation where it's difficult to connect with people.

“So we decided to do an event that would help break the ice and help Vancouver connect. So, we used Basecamp Card Co. as questions to connect people in exchange for free rides.”

Dubois is the first mentor for AXE in Western Canada something he says he is really proud of as the U.S. head mentor is John Legend.
