Stranded rider rescued

A stranded motorbiker was rescued Monday night in the hills above Lake Country, because he did all the right things.

Central Okanagan Search and Rescue was called to perform the rescue after RCMP were alerted to a SPOT emergency beacon requesting help.

“The subject’s motorbike suffered a mechanical breakdown, so he ended up being stranded in the vicinity of Echo Lake,” explains COSAR Search Manager Ephraim Nowak.

The man was stranded along Echo Lake Forest Service Road, which is located between Wood Lake and Beaver Lake in the Lake Country area.

Nowak says the motorbike rider was well-prepared for the conditions and did all the right things to make the rescue a success.

“The rider made a trip plan and told a family member where he was going. He also took a SPOT Personal Tracker, allowing him to send a distress signal which brought rescue crews right to his location. Once activated, the rider stayed where he was until rescue crews arrived.”

COSAR located the subject using the coordinates transmitted from the GPS tracking beacon and brought the uninjured subject and his bike back to Kelowna.

COSAR would like to remind the public to remember the three T’s: Trip Planning, Training, and Taking the Essentials.

“These items contributed to a positive outcome for this rescue,” adds Nowak.
