Blaze started by fireworks

Late night fireworks almost resulted in disaster Friday night, after 40 cedars caught fire just a few metres from a house on Beach Avenue in Kelowna.

Police were called to the house just south of downtown at 3 a.m. to find the hedge up in flames and two people evacuated from the nearby house.

Crews were able to quickly knock down the flames before the fire was able to spread to the house.

Sixteen firefighters responded to the fire, along with three fire trucks and one rescue truck.

RCMP are continuing to investigate the incident, but have determined it was caused by the misuse of fireworks.

Fireworks are illegal in the City of Kelowna without obtaining a special permit.
