Turner stars in decathlon

Kelowna track star Rostam Turner is at the top of his sport.

Turner concluded the track season in style recently, capturing the gold medal in the decathlon at the 2016 NACAC Track & Field Championships in San Salvador, El Salvador.

He did so in record-breaking fashion, finishing the gruelling 10-event competition with 7,601 points.

The previous record of 7,306 points was established by his brother James two years ago.

Competing in three decathlons in 2016, Rostam Turner improved on his overall points total each time.

In Chula Vista, CA, he was third overall with a points total of 7,466 while establishing personal best performances in seven of the 10 events.

Representing Team Canada at the Pan American Cup in Ottawa, he won a Pan Am silver medal and was named 2016 national champion, with a score of 7,565 points.

The decathlon includes four track and six field events.

Events include:

  • 100 metres
  • 400 metres
  • 1500 metres
  • 110 metre hurdles
  • Long jump
  • High jump
  • Pole vault
  • Shot put
  • Discus
  • Javelin

James Turner just missed out of his attempt to qualify for the Rio Olympics.
