Putting heat into summer

Cue the wind chimes and mysterious music.

As The Sun Burns, New Vintage Theatre’s parody soap opera, opens its fourth season Saturday at The Black Box Theatre.

Our first show is a sexy, beach-style murder mystery — very Kathleen Turner — called Body Heat. 

It seems Miss Kelowna Friendship (Kaitlyn Anutooshkin) has summer fever and s is ready to drop her current love to find someone a bit more profitable.

Perhaps it’ll be the new-to-town, dangerous Brit, Sir Winston (David Gadd), who seems very James Bond or maybe she’ll go for the upstart rapper, Banana Clip Bill (Nelsen Elsholtz), godson of the legendary Ice Cube.

But will she commit murder to get what she wants? 

There has also been a strange series of break-ins at actor Reginald Dimark’s (Justin Gaudio) house. Unusual things have been taken, not valuable, but disturbing.

The culprit is so innocent it is someone you would never expect. As the saying goes, “when you least expect it, expect it.”

This and more await you in our upcoming episode. We also hope people will wear their beachwear to add to our mood.

On Aug. 13, we will be doing a Tom Cruise-themed episode called Risky Business.There will be high-speed adventure, sexy cars, women and a reprise of that famous dance number and, of course, a priceless glass ornament. 

At this show, there will be prizes for those who dress ‘80s Tom Cruise — anything from Cocktail, to Top Gun, to The Outsiders is fair game.

It is also our Members Thank You Night, so those who are our members can get two-for-one tickets (as the door only).

Our televised version of the As The Sun Burns continues to air on Shaw TV and online. We are thrilled to have our own title on the menu, so you can find us more easily and recently they have been airing all our original episodes in together so people can get caught up.

Soap stars in this summer’s episodes include popular local actors Kaitlyn Anutooshkin, Victoria Weaver, Brock Gratz, Reid Gratz, Justin Gaudio, Dave Gadd, Nelsen Elsholtz, Graham Daley, Dana Murphy, Joseph Otoo, Gloria Helfrick-Poulette and Brent Appelgath — and yours truly.

Tickets for the July 16 and Aug. 13 shows are still available, but going quickly. Advance tickets are $15 or at Prospera Place Box Office; $25, cash only. 

All shows are at The Black Box Theatre starting at 7:30 p.m.
