Moores new Blazers boss

Kamlooops Blazers have appointed a familiar face to their front office.

Co-owner Tom Gaglardi announced Friday that the ownership group has selected Don Moores as team president, CEO and alternate governor.

“We’re thrilled to introduce somebody who shouldn’t need much introduction to Kamloops,” Gaglardi said at a noon-hour news conference held at his Sandman Signature Hotel.

Moores has spent much his life in hockey and the media business in the city.

“I’ve got to say it’s great to be home,” Moores said.

“When Tom and Mark (Recchi, co-owner) called me a while back, I was humbled and honoured that they would think of me for this position,” he added, recalling years as assistant coach in the late 1980s. “Once you’re a Blazer, you always are.”

Born and raised in Kamloops, Moores will have full autonomy over business operations of the team.

He played junior hockey for the Kamloops Chiefs from 1973 to 1976. He also worked as assistant coach from 1985 to 1990 and served as a director for the Kamloops Blazers Sports Society from 2006 to 2008.

Since 2008, he’s been living in Nanaimo.

“Kamloops is home, and my wife and I are thrilled to return to the city that we raised our kids in. I am excited to get started and to continue to help the franchise grow.”

“I think it’s great,” said Don Hay of Moores’ new role. “A local guy, grew up in Kamloops. “I think he’ll be a great addition to our staff.”

The team is co-owned by Shane Doan, Jarome Iginla, Mark Recchi, Darryl Sydor and Gaglardi.
