What to do with the kids?

As elementary school kids finish up their last day of school on Thursday, parents may be wondering what to do with their children, who suddenly have plenty of free time on their hands.

The Province of B.C. has recently released an interactive map for parents that shows the different childcare options available in a particular area.

Additionally, the province pointed to their document, ‘Parents’ Guide to Selecting and Monitoring Child Care in B.C.’ which gives an outline of how parents can find the best fit for their child.

For parents considering leaving their kids at home rather than sending them to childcare services, a press release from the province states there is no legislation in Canada on when a child can be left at home unsupervised.

“Because every child is different, parents must use their best judgment when deciding whether or not their child is ready to stay home alone,” the release states.

Despite the lack of legislation, the government suggests not leaving kids under the age of 13 home alone for longer than a few hours.

“Know your child. Some children are more mature than others. Make sure your child is ready for the added responsibility.”
