Get set for Canada Day

City of Vernon staff have been putting up the big maple leaf flags and tidying the gardens in Polson Park ahead of Canada Day celebrations on Friday.

“It's going to be a great show,” said David Frost, president of the North Okanagan Canada Day Society. “There's lots of entertainment scheduled.”

Activities include:

  • Reagan Sieg FMX with shows at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
  • Dogopogo will be running a dog agility at 10:30 a.m.
  • O'Keefe Ranch carriage rides around the park, 12-4 p.m.

Frost said there will be dance demos by Ruth McGrath Dance Studio, medieval duels, martial arts and cheer-leading.

Stage acts include: Armonia, Shaughnessy Rose, Sadok Ukranian Dancers, Kalamalka Highlanders Pipe Band, Fiddler and the Keys, Kiki the Eco Elf, Hoop Dancing with Alassa Johnson and Magician Leif David.

What else?

“A dunk tank,” said Frost. “Even the mayor himself will be in the dunk tank at 11 a.m. so come on down for some fun.”

Food vendors will be on hand.

The society is still looking for some volunteers, especially to set up at Polson Park ahead of the festivities as well as take down the site in the late afternoon.

Those interested can show up at the society's tent in the park on the day and be put to work. Set up runs from 5-8 a.m.

Fireworks are also returning for Canada Day fun in Vernon, sponsored by Craftsman Collision. This year, they will be fired from a barge off Kal Beach.

Frost said there will be a free shuttle service to and from the beach, run from 8-11:30 p.m. The shuttles can be caught every 30 minutes from Craftsman Collision, 2727-35th Ave., and every 20 minutes from the Okanagan College parking lot, 7000 College Way.

The fireworks, which will be choreographed and synchronized to music, will begin at 10:30 p.m.

People are encouraged to arrive early and bring lawn chairs, a flashlight and blankets. Pets and alcohol are not allowed on the beach.
