Dean to row in Rio

Rowing Canada made it official today.

Kelowna's Will Dean will compete for Canada at the Olympics in Rio.

Dean is a member of the men's quadruple sculls, which qualified for the games at the final qualifying regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland in May.

The Kelowna native will be competing in his second Olympic Games. In London in 2012, Dean finished ninth as a member of the four.

Last year, Dean captured double gold in the quad sculls and the eights at the Pan Am Games in Toronto.

The rowing competition will take place at the Lagoa Stadium, August 6-14, with eight men’s events and six women’s events.

Dean is one of three athletes with Kelowna ties named to compete for Canada in Rio.

Swimmer Kierra Smith, a gold medalist at the 2015 Pan Am Games, will compete in the breaststroke.

Another swimmer, 16-year-old Taylor Ruck, who moved to Arizona at 10 months of age, was named to the team as a relay swimmer.

The Rio Olympics begin Aug. 5.
