Bobcat toys with snake

Jan Van Schalm was watering his plants on Sunday when he witnessed an interesting wildlife encounter.

His home, on Lakeview Road, backs onto Kalimor Regional Park. It was there in a some low shrubs that Van Schalm saw a bobcat using a large snake as a play toy.

The snake could have possibly been a rattle snake or a great basin gopher snake, according to Van Schalm's wife Johanna.

The cat tossed the serpent around for some time, while Van Schalm took photos from his backyard.

Johanna says they often have bobcats in the neighbourhood, but she had never seen a snake that large in the area.

“We once had a bear come in our yard last September,” she said. “We use to have coyotes until we built a fence, but nothing more than a garden snake has ever been in our yard.”
