Support for youth centre

Penticton’s Ascend Salon will be opening its doors the first Monday of every month to raise money for The YES Project and its goal of building a youth centre.

Starting July 4, the salon will welcome people with budgetary constraints from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for hair cuts and services, with clients leaving what they can.

One hundred per cent of those donations will go directly to the project.

Also, Ascend will be inviting hair stylists from other salons to donate their time and services.

"As stylists, we have an amazing opportunity to influence our community, and I think that we tend to downplay our importance," said salon owner David Greenwood. "We have the ability to really connect with people, to talk about real issues and recognize a serious need within our community.

I felt like so many of us are taking our voice for granted. Stylists have the ability to be a voice and influence our community in a positive way. I thought it was about time to start doing that.”

Project coordinator Amberlee Edrmann is excited that the salon is hosting the fundraiser.

"One of the three goals of The YES Project is to build a youth resource centre in Penticton. Penticton is in urgent need of a youth centre, for a safe place for youth to get support and resources," she said.

Others who wish to donate to the project can do so any time at Ascend Salon, #101-3450 Skaha Lake Road.
