Vees' duo selected 10, 17

A pair of Penticton Vees know where their NHL dreams will take them.

Centre Tyson Jost, who played midget hockey in Kelowna before moving to the BC Hockey League's Penticton Vees, was selected 10th overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the NHL draft Friday.

Teammate, defenceman Dante Fabbro, was the 17th player selected, taken by the Nashville Predators.

Both are committed to play college hockey next season in the United States. Jost is scheduled to play in North Dakota while Fabbro will attend attend Boston University.

Jost is just the second BCHL player ever taken in the top 10 behind Kyle Turris who was taken third overall by Phoenix in 2007.

"It's nice to get recognized. Deep down it is humbling and it's a huge honour," said Jost.

As for going to Colorado, Jost said it's very special, but added, it's just the start of the journey.

"It's a new chapter in your life and there's going to be a lot of hard work that comes along with this. I'm so excited for the dream.

"It's something I've been working so hard for so I'm just going to keep pushing until I reach my ultimate goal which is winning more than one Stanley Cup, because that's what I want to do as a player."

Jost had a whirlwind 2015-2016 season.

His accomplishments included a gold medal with Canada at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, a gold medal with Canada West at the World Junior A Challenge where he was the captain and setting a new Canadian scoring record at the World U18 tournament in North Dakota, where his 15 points surpassed Connor McDavid’s previous record.

Jost was third in BCHL scoring, amassing 42 goals and 104 points in just 48 games.

Fabbro, who also participated at the Ivan Hlinka, World Jr. A Challenge and World Under 18 tournaments, led all BCHL defencemen in scoring last season.

He had 14 goals and 67 points in 45 games.

A third BCHL player, Dennis Cholowski, was selected also selected in the first round.

Cholowski, a defenceman with the Chilliwack Chiefs, was taken 20th overall by Detroit.

The first round of the NHL draft was held Friday night.

The final six rounds will be held Saturday morning.
