Falcons ready to swing

The Kelowna Falcons kick off their 2016 season Friday night at Elks Stadium.

The Falcons will host the Bellingham Bells at the free-admission home opener.

For the first time in franchise history, the Falcons begin the season as defending division champions, following last year’s record-setting run.

The Falcons played for the West Coast League title last August after winning 34 regular season games and their first pennant.

This year's roster of 35 players includes three returners. All-Star Max Carter, infielder Lane Lacrone and outfielder Joey Crunkilton all played significant roles last season.

They're joined by new manager Bryan Donahue, formerly of Mount Hood Community College.

“We’re excited about our group,” says general manager Mark Nonis. "We are hoping to see the same synergy as last year, and I think our three returning guys can be leaders bringing together our team quickly.”

The team includes nine players from Washington state, seven from California and one from West Kelowna.  Trevor Mlait was a standout for the Okanagan Athletics, and just completed his first season playing for Utah State University.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. for Friday's game, with the first pitch at 6:35.

It's the first in a three-game weekend series.
