Castanet readers give big

Castanet readers have raised more than $30,000 for the victims of the Fort McMurray wildfire, a figure that will double once it's matched by the federal government.

Castanet will be closing the Castanet Cares campaign at the end of May, the last day the federal government will match donations raised.

Donations can still be made here until May 31.

Tammy Watson of the Canadian Red Cross came by the Castanet office Wednesday with a ceremonial cheque for $30,770, the total raised so far by the campaign.

“I am speechless,” she said.

The money will go to providing emergency help for those who have lost everything in the blaze.

The Canadian Red Cross campaign for Fort McMurray has raised $102 million, smashing all previous records.

The fire destroyed more than 2,400 structures in the Northern Alberta city.

The Alberta government says a re-entry of Fort McMurray evacuees is scheduled to start on June 1.
