Sailing away with prizes

Kelowna Yacht Club racer Scott Moore and his sailing team aboard Corona Bob took first overall at the regatta held on Okanagan Lake this past weekend

The 2016 Blossom Time Regatta held annually on the May long weekend and sponsored by the Kelowna Yacht Club got off to a slow start on Saturday when the necessary winds did not come up until noon.

The 27 participants in the four divisions were competing with fellow club members as well as eight visiting boats from Calgary, Nelson, Vernon, Summerland and Penticton.

Four races were held Saturday.

Another four races on Sunday were under totally different conditions – with strong winds and threatening rains.

However, the rain held off and the challenging conditions made for some exciting stories.

The race winners are:

Fleet 1

  • 1st place – Nauti Girl, Tom Guenther (Kelowna Yacht Club)
  • 2nd place – Eclipse, Marc Noel (Kelowna Yacht Club)
  • 3rd place – Aftershock, Frank Halperin (Kelowna Yacht Club)

Fleet 2

  • 1st place – The Factor, Fred Trautmann (Summerland Yacht Club)
  • 2nd place – Blu Velvet, Rudy Enzmann (Penticton Yacht Club)
  • 3rd place – Shadowfax, Danny Foster (Kelowna Yacht Club)

Fleet 3

  • 1st place – Corona Bob, Scott Moore (Kelowna Yacht Club)
  • 2nd place – Grasshopper, Rob St. Onge (Kelowna Yacht Club)
  • 3rd place – Dynasty 2, George Quade (Kelowna Yacht Club)

525 Fleet

  • 1st place – Texas Tea, Aaron Leskosek (Kelowna Yacht Club)
  • 2nd place – Shazam, Vic Blewett (Kelowna Yacht Club)
  • 3rd place – Storm Castle Rock, Brian Dillabough (Vernon Yacht Club)

The Kelowna Yacht Club hosts a weekly open racing series and will be host to the Melges class national championships this June. They next open regatta is the Commodore’s Cup, set for Aug. 12-14.
