Island driver crashes again

More driving woes for the man implicated in the death of a Langford RCMP officer.

CTV News is reporting Jake Fenton, the man said to be involved in the crash which killed Const. Sarah Beckett last month, was injured in a rollover accident early Sunday morning.

Police in Langford, allege they tried to do a road check on the vehicle about 1 a.m., but it did not stop. It was found later, rolled over, with two injured people inside.

Malahat Fire Chief Rob Patterson told CTV News Fenton was unconscious with serious injuries to his head or neck, when crews arrived.

"He was in the drivers side of the truck," said Patterson.

Police have not confirmed Fenton was involved and the condition of the two is not known. However, Patterson said the vehicle was damaged such that fire crews had to cut off the roof to get the driver out.

He stated a female occupant had already been extracted from the vehicle by other first responders.

"Neither of them were wearing seatbelts, so that was pretty evident by the position of the seatbelts when we got there."

The Independent Investigations Office of BC is looking into the incident.

"The initial focus of the IIO investigation will be to determine if there is a connection between the injuries of the affected persons and actions or inactions of police," the IIO stated on its website.

The IIO is also investigating the crash which killed Const. Beckett.

Fenton was released from police custody and has not been charged in connection with the April incident.
