Speeding up Knox

Engine exhaust echoed throughout Knox Mountain Park Saturday, as cars of all shapes and sizes sprinted to the top of the hill.

The park plays host to the 59th annual Knox Mountain Hill Climb, a time trial event where cars in several different classes try to beat their best times, as well as others, up the hill.

Seventy-seven competitors signed up to race this year, paying the registration fee of $300. The winner of the event takes home coveted bragging rights.

In addition to the time trials, dozens of cars were on display in the park for the show and shine.

Brent Thorkelson has raced at the Knox Mountain Hill Climb for 15 years, but stepped out of the competition part of it a few years ago.

He now dedicates himself, and his 2007 Porsche GT3, to raising money for cancer research for children through Hands Together for a Cure.

Those who donate $500 or more to the foundation will be eligible to have a ride up Knox Mountain in the Porsche, an exhilarating experience to say the least.

Thorkelson also takes sick children for blasts up the hill, leaving them with an unforgettable experience.

The competition runs from May 21 to 22, with the final run closing at 5 p.m. Sunday. Entry is $15.
