Firefighter's daughter killed

A 15-year-old triplet killed in a car crash while fleeing wildfires around Fort McMurray is being remembered as a bright, engaging student and voracious reader who dreamed of becoming a nurse.

Emily Ryan and her cousin Aaron Hodgson died on Wednesday when their SUV collided with a tractor trailer on Highway 881 near Lac La Biche, Alta.

Her sister Chelsi Ryan says she was an outgoing, confident girl who loved to read so much that she kept her book collection in pristine condition and hated it when people dog-eared pages.

Their father, Cranley Ryan, is deputy fire chief in Saprae Creek east of Fort McMurray, and Chelsi Ryan says he inspired his daughter to want to become a nurse so she could also help others.

She says her dad's fellow firefighters risked losing their own homes while saving their house, so they could keep their memories of Emily — including her book collection.

Fort McMurray Composite High School Principal Kevin Bergen says the Grade 9 student was bright and mature and he hoped she and her fellow triplets Abby Ryan and Lucas Ryan would be leaders at the school in the years to come.
