Local dancer pays it forward

Jera Wolfe began studying ballet as a teen at Kelowna’s own Mission Dance Centre & Company. He then went on to train at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School and in 2010 was a contestant on So You Think You Can Dance. Wolfe, of Metís heritage, currently dances professionally with Canada’s leading Indigenous dance company, Red Sky.

In town to perform with Mission Dance Centre & Company in their upcoming performance, Swan Lake, Wolfe’s enthusiasm for dance is contagious to the next generation. Dancing the role of Prince in this age-old story, Wolfe partners with female dancers from MDC’s High Performance Program in breathtaking lifts and choreography that will be sure to please audiences.

“This is an amazing opportunity for our pre-professional level dancers to learn partnering with someone so capable,” says Tanya Bakala, Artistic Director of Mission Dance. “These lifts require both dancers to have perfect timing, trust, precision and strength; Jera makes it look effortless.”

The classical ballet – Swan Lake – features Jera Wolfe, with Annette Bakala and Lydia Swart dancing the roles of White and Black Swan on Saturday, May 14 at Evangel Church in Kelowna, a 1200 seat auditorium with plenty of free parking. There will be two shows with a matinee at 2 p.m. and an evening performance at 7:30 p.m.

Admission by donation at the door, or by advance donation online for preferred seating at www.missiondancecentre.com. Proceeds go to Youth in Performing Arts and The Metro Community.
