Wife detained in theft case

A Penticton man was released on bail this week and his wife remains behind bars after a bizarre shoplifting incident.

Douglas and Mae Postel are facing charges of robbery and theft $5,000 or under, stemming from an incident at the Real Canadian Superstore on April 30.

According to the RCMP, on that date security noticed the pair leaving the store with stolen items.

When they were confronted by security, the man lifted up his shirt and showed that he had a knife, telling the man to back off.

He stopped and the pair jumped into a tow truck, before being kicked out of the vehicle by the driver.

Police observed the couple walking on Dawson Avenue and they were both arrested.

The items they stole from the store, as well as the knife shown in the incident were also retrieved.

Judge Gregory Koturbash released Douglas Postel on bail after hearing there was an offer of employment.

He urged him, however, to stay on the straight and narrow.

Mae Postel was detained because in the judge's words, "she appeared to be off the rails again," and this was a way to protect the public.

Koturbash reversed his earlier decision, in regards to Douglas Postel, that the couple have no contact, saying he didn't want to cut off that line of communication.

The matter is next slated for May 11 in Penticton court.
