Beard fest gets hairy

Forty-seven men will have their facial hair judged at a unique competition underway in Penticton.

The first ever Okanagan Beard Festival kicked off at Cannery Brewing, Monday night.

"It's just a fun and friendly competition, a way for bearded fellows to come together and show off their beards," said co-organizer Tim Tweed.

Tweed, of Splendid Bastard Beard Supply, and Peter Beauchamp of the Okanoggin Barber Shop came up with the idea to hold the festival late last year after a long talk about beards and beard festivals.

Monday night's event included technical measurements of the beards and judging on overall manliness and style.

Upcoming competitions are March 14 at the Copper Mug Pub and April 11 at the Barking Parrot Bar. The finals will be April 25, back at Cannery Brewing.

"Over the next two events they will be judged again on the same criteria," said Tweed. "This gives them a chance in between events to improve their style and grooming."

Spectators are invited and partial proceeds from the festival will go to benefit Discovery House.
