Slow start buries Warriors

The West Kelowna Warriors winning streak was halted at seven games Friday night.

Three unanswered goals in the first period by the Penticton Vees was more than enough in a 5-2 win over the Warriors Friday at the SOEC.

The game marked the end of a successful road swing for the Warriors, in which they won six of seven straight away from home.

Tyson Jost scored twice in the opening 20 minutes, the first just 33 seconds in on a quick wrap-around.

He put the Vees up 2-0 10 minutes later with a quick shot from the left faceoff circle.

Scott Conway made it 3-0 shortly thereafter.

Bryan Basillico got the Warriors on the board early in the second just as a Penticton penalty had expired, but Nicholas Jones restored the three goal lead on a power-play.

Jonathan Desbiens extended his goal-scoring streak to eight games and cut the deficit to two before the end of the second.

The Warriors were unable to get any closer as Chris Gerrie scored the lone goal of the third to give Penticton the three goal cushion.

The loss, coupled with Salmon Arm's 6-2 win in Coquitlam, leaves the Silverbacks five points in back of the second place Warriors. Salmon Arm have also played two fewer games.

The Warriors finally return home, where they'll play four of their final five regular-season games, beginning with a date with the Langley Rivermen Saturday night.
