A woman who may have been on her way to the Okanagan Symphony was struck by a bus Friday night in Kelowna.
The incident occurred just after 7 p.m at the intersection of Richter and Doyle. According to those on board the BC Transit bus, the driver slammed on the brakes after hitting something on the road, which sent passengers flying forward in their seats.
Transit rider Charlie Flynn said the driver immediately called 911, although it wasn’t clear to him what had happened until he stepped off the bus.
“Everyone got off the bus, and the driver must have been in shock. We all went over to the woman and took off our jackets (to put on her) because we didn’t want her to go into shock," he said, adding he has military first aid training.
Flynn stated the woman had lacerations to her head, nose and lip.
“There was a lot of blood, but she knew her name and knew where she was. She said she was going to the symphony.”
The victim was transported to ambulance by emergency crews who found the woman in a marked crosswalk. Police were not able to comment on the incident, but said the woman would be taken to hospital.
It was not clear whether another bus would be called to transport the passengers elsewhere.
