Oysters return to the city

Despite the failure of the last seafood restaurant at the Prestige Inn, another establishment of the same theme will be opening in the same location.

This time, however, the seafood restaurant already has a strong following and relationship with the Prestige Hotels. West Coast Grill + Oyster Bar operates in partnership at with the Prestige in Cranbrook, Nelson, Sooke and Smithers.

Owner, Valerie Lessard, says the restaurant is seafood centric.

“That comes from our home base in Sooke - in fact, we often say that 'the sea is our pantry’. But we also aim to serve compelling flavours right across our menu."

The menu will include steaks, salads and burgers to the signature ‘Fishermen’s Bowl’ and fish and chips, explains Lessard.

“We’re really excited to join in downtown Kelowna’s burgeoning dining scene. There is so much growth occurring downtown, and we see a great opportunity to connect local growers and winemakers with our guests,” Lessard says. “We’re also pleased to host private functions in our newly renovated banquet spaces.”

Travis Pye has been brought on as head chef, drawing upon ingredients from local suppliers, as well as coastal fish purveyors.  Pye’s menu is still in the works; however he plans to include happy hour ‘Buck a Shuck’ oysters, sushi samplers, fish tacos and chowders at the Oyster Bar.

Previously Pilgrim and Pearl sat in the Abbott location, but in January the Prestige Hotel explained the establishment was closed and the hotel would be "going in a different direction."

West Coast Grill + Oyster Bar is scheduled to open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus weekend brunches in early in March.
