Patient scuffles with RCMP

Two Kelowna RCMP officers sustained hand injuries after an incident at Kelowna General Hospital this week.

Just before 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, police responded to a call from emergency room.

A man described by police as “volatile” had barricaded himself in a treatment room and covered all of the security cameras.

Three officers attended the scene and attempted to negotiate with the man. When the barricaded door was opened, the man ran out of the room and began hitting the officers.

Police eventually managed to regain control of the man.

One of the officers suffered fractured bones in his hand in the altercation, while another sprained his hand.

One officer will be off duty for several weeks while he recovers, and the other is on restricted duties.

Charges are not being recommended by police at this time
