Cotter off to hot start

Two-time defending champion Jim Cotter is off to a quick start on day one of the Canadian Direct Insurance BC Men's Curling Championships in Nelson.

Cotter and his Vernon/Kelowna quartet won twice Wednesday to move within two wins of qualifying for the weekend's playoffs.

The team, which also includes Ryan Kuhn (third), Tyrel Griffith (second) and Rick Sawatsky (lead), opened play Wednesday morning with a 6-3 win over Will House of Richmond. They followed that up with a 9-3 thumping of Chase Martyn of New Westminster in the afternoon.

In the opener, Cotter trailed 3-2 after six in what was a seesaw affair. He picked up a deuce in seven, then stole singles in eight and nine before running House out of rocks in 10.

There wasn't as much drama in the afternoon as Cotter and company put this one away with a steal of four in the eighth. The teams shook hands after that.

Cotter will take on former Kelowna resident and former B.C. champion Glen Jackson of Victoria Thursday morning in one winners side semi-final. The winner will have a chance to qualify for the playoff round Thursday night while the loser slides down to the "B" event of the triple knockout event.

Other Okanagan rinks were not as fortunate on day one.

Vernon's Mark Longworth gave up two in the fourth and steals in six, seven and eight in an 8-3 loss to Tom Buchy of Kimberley.

Jeff Richard lost to Jackson 6-5 in the morning draw as Jackson scored one with hammer in 10.

Both Longworth and Richard are back on the ice in the "B" event Wednesday night.
