Science rolls into town

Hundreds of Kelowna students will get a taste of the Science World experience next week, as the iconic learning centre takes to the road.

Science World’s On The Road program will bring several science demos, including Fantastic Forces and Earth as well as Wind & Science to the Okanagan to “pique science curiosity, boost science literacy, and inspire future science and technology leaders across B.C.”

The On The Road program was first established in 2005 and ran until 2012.

“During that time the program reached more than 1.3 million British Columbians, including more than one million students in schools K-12,” said Charis Whitbourne, spokesperson for Science World, in a statement. “The team made more than 1,000 visits to communities large and small across B.C.”

The program got back on the road in September 2015 and will run until June 2016.

They'll visit 16 communities in addition to Kelowna.

On Monday, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School and Mount Boucherie Secondary will be visited by the science roadshow followed by Mar Jok Elementary and Ellison Elementary on Tuesday. Chief Tomat Elementary and the Sensisyusten House of Learning will host the program on Wednesday and Studio 9 Independent School of the Arts and the Willowstone Academy will see the production on Thursday.

On Friday, the On The Road program will host a professional development workshop for teachers in the region.

“A Science World science curriculum specialist will share techniques with local teachers to help them incorporate inquiry-based science learning into their classrooms," said Whitbourne.
