New home permits up

There was a jump in commercial permits issued by Vernon City Hall last year, but new home construction is still out in front, according to figures released this week.

Vernon's planning department reports a 15.8 per cent increase in the number of building permits issued in 2015, compared to the year before. There were 381 permits issued last year, according to a memo from department head Kim Flick.

Construction value also increased to $110,400,000 last year, compared to $93 million in 2014 and $50.4 million in 2013.

“Some of the increase in 2015 is attributable to the construction of the new BC Hydro facility on Kalamalka Lake Road ($20.7 million) and several commercial building permits worth over $1 million each,” said Flick, pointing to the Canadian Tire building at the Village Green Centre, the Underwood-Ashton professional building, the BCAA office near Walmart, the new clubhouse at Predator Ridge, renovations to the Vernon recreation centre and a new Tim Hortons on 27th Street.

Despite the increase in commercial permits, new home construction still exceeds the value of every other category of building permit type at $49 million, said Flick, who also reported a 46 per cent hike in the number of subdivision applications in 2015 to 38.

However, the number of development permit applications dropped 13 per cent last year.
