Rockets retake top spot

The Kelowna Rockets were able to put Friday's debacle behind them.

Tyson Baillie scored with seconds left in regulation time and Justin Kirkland scored the lone goal in a shootout giving the Rockets a much needed 3-2 win Saturday over the Calgary Hitmen.

Michael Herringer, who was pulled Friday after allowing four goals, including two from outside the blueline, turned aside 27 shots in regulation time, four in overtime and all three he faced in the shootout.

Herringer was named the game's first star.

"It was an important game for us, especially how yesterday went," said Herringer.

The Hitmen, up 2-1, pushed throughout the third period but Herringer was able to keep them at bay, allowing Baillie the opportunity to get the game tying goal.

"We played a good 60 minutes tonight. We kept most of the shots to the outside.

The Rockets lost the key faceoff in Calgary end late in regulation but, Baillie said Kirkland did a great job of pressuring after the puck.

"Justin Kirkland came away with the puck and I was just screaming for it and he put it in my wheelhouse," said Baillie who picked up his first points after going pointless the four previous games.

Twice the Hitmen grabbed a one-goal lead and twice the Rockets were able to tie it.

Jake Bean opened the scoring in the first before Dillon Dube tied it eight minutes into the second.

Keegan Kanzig got that one back a little over two minutes later.

It looked like the goal would stand up until Baillie forced the extra period and, eventually the shootout.

The win allows the Rockets to leapfrog Lethbridge back into tip spot in the overall Western Hockey League standings.

The Hurricanes were beaten 2-0 by Kootenay.

The surging Royals remained just two points behind the Rockets .

Kelowna's busy stretch continues Monday when they host the Seattle Thunderbirds at 2 p.m.

The two teams then travel down to Seattle for a return engagement Tuesday evening.
