Fake news floods Facebook

Upsetting and entirely false news stories are making the rounds on social media, put up by spamming websites looking for clicks.

The stories started showing up on popular Kelowna Facebook groups Sunday afternoon with headlines like “3 Dead and 7 Critical in Multi-Car Crash in Kelowna” and “4 Dead and 11 Critical in Multi-Car Crash in Kelowna."

The fake news stories garnered attention for their apparent tragedy, but in reality they were false. There was no multi-car crash on Sunday.

The fake news stories were also poorly written and completely inaccurate.

The stories shared on Sunday include one from breakingreport.info and one from globalnewss.info.

A look through the homepages of the websites show the same news story exists multiple times with different city names plugged into the Kelowna spot.

Visiting the sites is also ill-advised, as the websites can be full of malware and appear to be using the fake headlines as click bait.
