Armstrong school safety

Some concerns over traffic safety outside Armstrong Elementary on Pleasant Valley Road have been rectified.

Concrete barriers have been installed on city property next to the 90-year-old school to stop vehicles using the space as an extra parking lot said Mayor Chris Pieper.

“It should improve safety around the school,” Pieper said.

The school's Parent Advisory Committee approached the city with their concerns last year because there was no designated walkway, which put children at risk according to principal Denise Brown.

“The city had put up no parking signs, but people were still using it,” said Brown.

Parking can be tricky when kindergarten students are being dropped off or picked up.

“It's a handoff to an adult,” explained Brown. “You must hand you child over to an adult.”

More staff parking has been put around the school's running oval to free up spaces for parents in the school parking lot, she said.
