Turkey and a ballot

A national holiday didn't deter Canadians from taking advantage of the final advance poll prior to next Monday's federal election.

About 1.2 million people went out on Thanksgiving Monday to cast their ballot across the country.

That was the largest turnout of the four days of advance voting which ran from Friday through Monday.

In total, about 3.6 million votes have already been cast, an increase of 71 per cent over 2011 when nearly 2.1 million votes were cast prior to the election.

The large turnout meant long lineups at many advance polling stations.

In the Central Okanagan, some people claimed they waited at least an hour to vote at the Capital News Centre while one man at the Westbank Lions Hall, who said he had already waited 90 minutes, was told it would be another hour.

Riding by riding results are not yet available, but are expected to be released soon.

Advance polls closed as the latest Nanos poll gives the Liberals 35.7 per cent support nationally. The reigning Conservatives are second with 28.9 per cent and the NDP trailing with 24.3 per cent support.

Polls in most of B.C. will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. next Monday.
