Cougar sighting update

UPDATE: Wednesday 2:30 p.m.

The Conservation Officer Service received two reports regarding a cougar in the Summerland area on Oct. 11.

One report suggested the animal came onto the complainant's porch. There was no additional conflict following that report, however.

"The COS is continuing to monitor the situation closely and requests residents to contact the COS immediately if the cougar is sighted," said conservation officer Dave Cox.

A report in Penticton was a sighting only.

UPDATE: 3:15 p.m.

ORIGINAL

Conservation officers are investigating a possible cougar sighting in Summerland.

Two separate reports were made on Monday of a cougar in the Cedar Avenue area.

Officer Jeff Hanratty said cougars are not common in that area, a light industrial neighbourhood on the west side of Giant's Head Mountain close to a small residential area and private school, but it is possible the animal could have made its way into town from the other side of the mountain.

If you saw a cougar or any other large wildlife in the Cedar Avenue area during the past several days, you’re asked to call the Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) line at 1-877-952-7277.
