Bear spray discharged

Emergency crews were called to a Vernon apartment building Thursday afternoon after someone discharged bear spray in one of the hallways.

Police, ambulance and Vernon Fire Rescue were called to the Capri Gardens apartment complex at the corner of 33rd Street and 34th Avenue just after 4 p.m.

No one was hurt in the incident, but several people left the building coughing and complaining of burning eyes and throats.

Fire crews donned breathing apparatuses before entering the building where they set up fans to clear the air.

Const. Jocelyn Noseworthy said police did not know who discharged the noxious spray or why.

Noseworthy said police were going to talk to the residents once the bear spray had been vented from the hallway.
