Where's the seatbelt?

Police are scratching their heads over the number of people not wearing seatbelts in Lumby.

A traffic services officer spotted 78 violators just last Friday, according to RCMP spokesperson Const. Jocelyn Noseworthy.

Few tickets were issued, however.

The officer started noticing the seatbelt infractions while spending an hour in a school zone, following a number of complaints about speeding.

"Despite spending an hour in the school zone over the day, the highest speed the officer saw was 37 km/h," said Noseworthy. "This is excellent news, and we commend the drivers in Lumby for slowing down in the school zone to keep their children safe."

Noseworthy said the officer spent much of the day observing drivers near the four-way stop at Shuswap Avenue and Vernon Street (Highway 6), another source of public complaints.

"He wrote violation tickets for the following offences: 12 tickets for failing to stop at a stop sign, five for the use of electronic devices, three for no driver's licence, five for no seatbelt and one for no insurance."
