Mystery art crash lands

No, it's not a downed UFO. But it is a surprise piece of art that's popped up Kelowna's Cultural District.

Take a walk downtown, and you might come across a piece of metal art that resembles a spacecraft.

"It seems to have become entangled and stuck, suspended above a popular Cultural District walkway," the Kelowna Art Gallery says in a press release.

The unannounced artwork wasn't installed by guerrilla artists; it's actually part of the launch of Fossils from the Future, a public art project created by Okanagan artist Johann Wessels.

Pedestrians will notice a metal label near the "wreckage" that offers information and ideas for interacting with the piece. People are encouraged to dive further into the experience and read what others have to say, watch video clips from “experts” and check out other behind-the-scenes “leaked” information at kelownaartgallery.com.

“One of the primary aims of this project is to get the community involved,” says Nataley Nagy, executive director at the gallery.

The installation is one of several that show up unannounced during the next five months.

Where will the next "fossil" be seen and when will it appear? “You'll have to be on the lookout ... and discover them for yourself,” says Nagy.

"We really want to hear what people think about these puzzling objects and hope that a lively discussion will ensue.”
