Heartland cast visits city

Stars from CBC's family drama Heartland made a stop in Penticton, Tuesday.

Four cast members were participating in Cruise with a Cause, for the Canadian Mental Health Association.

Graham Wardle, Amber Marshall, Shaun Johnston and Alisha Newton signed autographs and posed for pictures with fans at the Lakeside Villa Inn & Suites.

"All of the cast members are in season nine production right now, and this week is a break for them," said publicist Jody Stockfish. "But instead of going home, they are dedicating their time to Cruise with a Cause."

The event was started three years ago by Wardle, who plays Ty Borden on the show, and Don McLeod, a Vancouver actor and music producer. The first year, funds were raised for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of B.C. and the second, it was for Sophie's Place, a child advocacy centre.

"I want to put the spotlight on issues that are difficult to talk about," said Wardle. "And with a lot of teens having problems with depression and suicide, we wanted to contribute to this conversation and felt this was a good time to do it."

On Saturday, the foursome embarked on a seven-day motorcycle marathon from Calgary. So far, there have been stops in Sicamous and Penticton, with upcoming meet and greets in Vernon, Cranbrook and High River, Alta.

On Tuesday, the four signed photos for a $10 donation to the CMHA.

Fans, who waited in line to meet the stars, said they enjoy Heartland because it's a good show about horses and family.

"It's a good heartwarming family show," said Tassandra Cowie as she stood in line with her daughter, Taylor. "And it's always a good thing to support local charities."
