Watch those school zones

Penticton RCMP remind drivers that school speed zones will soon be in effect throughout the region, and that drivers can expect increased enforcement.

Fines for speeding in a school zone range from $196 to $253.

At this time of year, schools become busy with increased levels of parental traffic, school buses, cyclists and pedestrians.

Historically, it has been noted the majority of infractions are by drivers who frequent the area regularly, police say.

Pedestrians are reminded that crosswaks are in place for their use and safety – please don't jaywalk.

Children may not be thinking about safety during the first, exciting days of school, so drivers – including parents dropping off or picking up their own children – need to exercise caution.

Motorists are urged to leave early and watch for speed zones.

Parents are asked to park only in designated areas around schools and are reminded that loading zones are not for parking.
