Residents in the Lynrick Road area of Black Mountain had a surprise visitor Tuesday afternoon when a cougar was spotted wandering around the neighbourhood.
Heather Loenen said the large cat was first spotted by a neighbour at around 4:30 p.m.
“It came out of the gully and was wandering through backyards,” said Loenen who called the police as the cat climbed into a nearby tree.
“The RCMP were really great. They had a member who waited to make sure it didn't move.”
By 6:30 a conservation officer was on scene and the cougar was tranquilized and taken away.
Loenen could not say for sure, but the speculation was the cougar was a younger cat.
“I've lived here for 17 years and this is the first time I've seen a cougar or even heard about a cougar in this area,” said Loenen who lives near Black Mountain School.
“There are a lot of kids and people walking and you don't expect to see a cougar,” she added.
