Lush, green painted lawn

With the City of Kelowna’s lawn watering restrictions taking effect today, one Kelowna resident has a solution for brown lawns.

Okanagan Lawn Painting officially began its operations on Tuesday. The company’s name speaks for itself.

Lee Coulthard, owner of the new company, said they use a “natural dye” to turn brown, drought-scorched lawns back to a fresh-looking green.

The product Coulthard uses is called Lawnlift, a dye that was developed in California and has been available in Canada for three years.

“It’s basically a non-toxic, biodegradable lawn dye that allows homeowners to have that perfect green grass all summer without turning on a sprinkler,” said Nicole Lundy, owner of Lawnlift Canada. “It’s a water-based lawn dye, made from all-natural ingredients.”

The dye is entirely for esthetic appeal and won't repair a dying lawn, but Lundy said it also won't harm the grass.

The colour can last anywhere from two weeks to three months, depending on the growth of the lawn and weather conditions.

Buying Lawnlift directly from the source costs about $70 to spray an average 1,000-square-foot lawn. Coulthard's service includes application and costs between $250 and $350 for a similar-sized lawn.

Lundy said business is taking off in B.C. take off, due to the drought.

She services athletic fields, movie sets and the real estate industry.

“People are blown away; they love the instant results,” Lundy said.
