Bartenders compete

Bartenders from throughout Western Canada are demonstrating their biggest and best moves at an event this long weekend in Penticton.

FlairFest 12, Canada's longest running bartending competition, got underway Friday night and continues through Sunday at the sun-splashed Barefoot Beach Resort on Skaha Beach.

"This competition is about uniting the people who share a passion for flair bartending," said Dave Simpson, president of the Bartenders Guild in Kelowna. "And this in my opinion is the most beautiful place on earth to do this."

Flair bartending, entails making dazzling moves using liquor bottles and cocktail shakers.

On Saturday afternoon, seven bartenders performed big ass moves, where each one got one minute to do their best moves.

The qualifiers are slated for 8 p.m. tonight and the finals will take place at 6 p.m. Sunday, with prizes awarded later in the evening.

"Bartending on its own used to be mundane, but with flair bartending you get to express yourself more," said Simpson. "It's a big show."

A live band Her Brothers is also slated to play at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Event costs are $10 for a weekend pass and $10 for a Sunday ticket.
