Kamloops RCMP are revealing information about what to look for after a credit card skimming scheme was discovered earlier this month.

Police alerted the media and the public a credit card skimmer had been located on pump 8 at the Chevron station at 1795 East Trans Canada Highway.

The attached pictures are of the device used at the Chevron Gas Station.

Chevron has advised they have put measures in place to prevent further occurrences at all Chevron gas stations in British Columbia.

As illustrated in the attached photographs, the skimmer is difficult to detect and appears to be a normal part of card reader. Skimmers are used by organized crime throughout Canada to access credit card information.

Credit card users need to be cautious when using their credit cards and credit card readers. This particular device is just one type of skimmer used to access credit card information by the criminal element.

What is credit card fraud?
Credit card fraud can happen several ways. Your card could be lost or stolen and used to purchase goods and services. A criminal could obtain your card data and use this information to manufacture a counterfeit card, or the data could be used to make telephone or Internet purchases (also referred to as “card not present” fraud).

Report it:

• Step 1 - If you have charges on your credit card that you didn’t make, or if you think you may have revealed your credit card number when you shouldn’t have, contact your credit card issuer right away using the phone number on the back of your card. The card issuer will take the appropriate steps to protect you from fraud.
• Step 2 - Contact your credit bureau and have fraud alerts placed on your credit reports: Equifax Canada, Toll free: 1 800 465-7166  or TransUnion Canada, Toll free: 1 877 525-3823
• Step 3 - Contact your local police
• Step 4 - Always report credit card fraud to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by visiting their website or calling 1-888-495-8501.
