Largest plane to hit YVR

The world's largest commercial airliner, the Airbus 380, will be touching down in Vancouver next year.

British Airways announced Thursday daily service from Vancouver to London's Heathrow Airport will begin May 1, 2016.

This will be the only scheduled A380 route in Western Canada.

All four Canadian cities served by British Airways will now be served by the latest aircraft in the company's fleet, with Calgary, Toronto and Montreal all featuring the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

"We're excited that our British Airways customers in Vancouver and the Pacific Northwest will be able to experience the newest addition to our fleet, with spacious cabins and extensive entertainment options," said company vice-president Robert Antoniuk.

"This is the culmination of a multibillion-pound investment in services that we know will further enhance the premium experience that our customers expect from British Airways."

The A380 was brought to Vancouver nine years ago as part of its test flight schedule. However, these are the first regularly scheduled commercial flights for the plane at YVR.

"To see this incredible aircraft return to YVR with scheduled service will be very exciting," said airport authority president Craig Richmond.

Vancouver will be the ninth airport in North America to receive the A380.

The A380 can accommodate up to 469 passengers in four cabins across two full decks.
